Julius Caesar Journal Entry #3

The majority of Shakespeare’s plays were performed in "The Globe Theater" which was located on Thames River on the opposite bank from London, England. It was octagonal in shape and seated spectators on the outside while the play was acted on the many stages in the center. This structure provided many advantages as well as many disadvantages.

One of the greatest advantages of The Globe Theater was that its structure was set up in a way in which there were many separate stages. This provided a number of different perspectives for the audience and so it probably gave them a good sense of the setting of the play. This also worked out for those operating the backstage of the play because with the actors on a different stage, it allowed them more time to set up a stage that was going to be used in an upcoming scene. Another advantage to this theater was that it had an open roof. Not only did this allow light and fresh air to enter, but it also gave a feeling of authenticity to those scenes that had outdoor settings.

One disadvantage to The Globe Theater was that, because of its octagonal shape, some audience members had a better view than others did. However, this is true of all modern theaters and so that should not be held against whoever designed the theater.
